Hard to believe Scorsese won Best Director for this at Cannes. Not because he didn't deserve it, but this is not the type of film you'd expect to play, let alone win a major prize there.
The painful humor really holds up to repeat viewings, and I think I've watched this more times than any other Scorsese film.
Not a new idea, but in the age of time-shifting and multiple distribution platforms, there's a different "current cinema" for all of us. Finally caught up with a couple of films you've covered in the past year -- UNCLE BOONMEE in theaters and CARLOS through Netflix HD streaming -- and am grateful to have interesting posts to read about them.
