You want to know what mise-en-scene is? I've just learned that Raul Ruiz has passed away. He did some mise-en-scene for which I would gladly, without hesitation, trade all the extant (and forthcoming, if applicable) episodes of MAD MEN, LIGHTS OUT, and BREAKING BAD.

If that doesn't sit well with you, then I don't know what to tell you.

I'm surprised no one's trotted out Rivette's rather malicious definition: "Mise en scène is that which Joseph Mankiewicz's films lack."

That Fuzzy Bastard

Oddly, I remember learning that mis-en-scene specifically referred to everything that *wasn't* camera or actor movement---production design, lighting, costume, color.
