From Yeelen (Brightness), Souleymane Cissé, 1987
On Friday, April 29 at 4 p.m. I will have the honor of moderating a discussion between the great Malian filmmaker Souleymane Cissé and the great American filmmaker Martin Scorsese. It's part of the Tribeca Film Festival's Tribeca Talks Directors' Series, and the web page for the event is here. I understand that "unique" is an oft-misused word, but it would seem a pretty apt one with respect to this particular happening, and I have to say I'm entirely blown away to be a part of it. Hope to see some of you there.

This sounds awesome. It would sound even more awesome if Tribeca were screening Yeelen, which is magnificent; I've only had the chance to see on DVD, and have wanted to catch it on the big screen since pretty much three or four minutes into that screening.

What a great time this sounds like. I hope I will be able to make it.

Man, this sounds incredible. The kind of thing that make me rethink my "I will never live in New York" stance.

Aw man, I friggin' envy you.
Have a great time.

What a great experience this will be! Do you know if Tribeca has plans to record and post on-line later?

Glenn, please get a bootleg from the soundboard guy so that you can share with us out of towners!

Nice gig Glenn, congrats. I'd like to second the request for a bootleg if at all possible, would love to hear the conversation.

Oh, how I'd love to be in the audience there. I hope they reach back beyond Yeelen to chat about Cissé's earlier films, too: I think Baara and Finyé are amazing, and in some respects even more interesting than what followed.

I'm sure you've made your homework, Glenn, but just in case... here's Marty telling how he discovered Yeelen at 2:30 in the morning one night: http://www.interviewmagazine.com/film/martin-scorsese-shutter-island/
